The SEO game has changed.
But also… it hasn’t.
Allow me to explain.
There are still many industries that require traditional SEO. Good SEO. Solid SEO. And we’ve seen them dominate, and not just in one place, but everywhere. AI Overviews, AI mode, blue links, even platforms like ChatGPT, and right there in the map pack too. All at the very top.
And these aren’t small industries. These are big-ticket industries. Big-ticket clients. The kind that are willing to pay top dollar for rankings and visibility.
Real Results Don’t Lie
We’ve seen it firsthand.
One of our success stories: client comes in, we do the work, and almost instantly they start getting quotes. And not just one or two… but consistently over a long period of time.
Another client, same thing. And all purely through traditional SEO; getting many, many quotes. And just the other day I had my colleague peek in backend and it was like:
April 20th… 18th… 17th… 16th… 15th… 15th… 15th… 13th… 12th…
At that point I told her to stop. We get it.
That’s what you want to see.
And honestly, I’m very happy with results like that. Those are the kinds of results where clients stick around long-term. Those are the moments where when you tell them, “we need to keep enhancing, adding, building,” they believe you. Because they’ve already seen it working.
What Actually Matters
Now, before going further into what’s changed, I have to say this clearly.
What matters most to us, as marketers, is that our clients succeed.
Big, small, competitive, non-competitive – it doesn’t matter! They have to succeed. It makes us happy to see them happy. To see their phone ring.
The other day I had a client text me twice. First message? He made his first sale from Western New York to Canada. Second message? His very first wine tour booking!
For the sake of clarity, he owns a transportation company. Fairly new. For six months, no SEO, no ads… no results. nothing.
And now? He’s over the moon.
And honestly, so am I.
Where Traditional SEO Still Wins
So when we step back and look at this, we’re seeing something crystal clear.
If you’re in a less competitive space, a less competitive industry, you can still do very, very well with traditional SEO. There’s so much untapped potential in some markets.
A lot of these companies have never worked with a marketing or SEO agency. They have no topical authority. Half the sites we get into don’t even have basic SEO titles or meta descriptions. Their headings are all over the place. The structure is a complete mess. There’s no direction, no strategy, no one guiding them…
You go in, fix the foundation, clean it up, make things clear and boom, like magic, it just works.
Where It Gets Difficult
But then we come to the other side.
Hyper-competitive industries.
And right now, these are your plumbers, HVAC companies, dentists, transportation companies. These spaces are getting saturated fast. Everyone is jumping in. New businesses popping up overnight.
And where these used to be easy to work with, easy to rank, easy to get moving… they’re just simply not anymore.
So What Are We Doing Now?
So the real question becomes, what are the next steps?
Let’s just be straightforward about it.
What we’re doing now in our SEO packages is baking in Google Ads.
Yes, intentionally.
Because after testing, after real campaigns, after looking at actual numbers on paper, and after exhausting every angle in competitive spaces, we’ve learned something important.
The website, and what’s on it, how it’s structured, how clearly it communicates, still matters a lot! Traditional SEO still matters.
But when you tie that together with Google Ads, even with small budget ad campaigns, something magical seems to happen.
They sync together and work in unison. The site and the ads start working together as one larger, well put together system.
And that’s the sweet spot.
That’s where the real power is now.
When Everything Finally Clicks
We’ve had clients who wanted to do everything. Be everywhere. Try every strategy. And nothing really clicked until we simplified it.
Fixed the site. Made it clear what they offer.
Then layered ads on top, aligned with that message.
That’s when things started moving.
I’ll give you another example.
We have a client who doesn’t even have a Google Business Profile. He doesn’t want to deal with reviews yet, especially negative ones early on.
But just with the website, solid SEO, and a focused approach, he’s getting exactly the kind of big-ticket jobs he wanted.
His business industry has multiple directions one can take, multiple services one can offer, generally, just have a lot going on. We narrowed it down. Focused about 70–80% on one high-value service.
And that’s all he books now. Like Magic.
He started with a small ad budget, around $35 a day, which we baked into the SEO service.
Now he’s happily spending $150+ a day or more.
And he calls every few days talking about another big job, another win.
AND GET THIS! SPEAK OF THE DEVIL! Literally while writing this blog post, HE CALLED! 21 Days into the month, 24 jobs booked, $11,000+ earned! Let me repeat that!
21 Days into the month, 24 jobs booked, $11,000+ earned! BOOM!
So whatever it is… it works.
Why Most Businesses Stay Stuck
(Back to proper blog tone.)
Then on the flip side, I see websites that are completely all over the place.
Owners trying to run ads themselves, not really knowing what they’re doing.
No structure. No alignment.
And nothing works.
There’s a very clear distinction there.
You align your website and your ads, and it works like a charm.
The Reality of SEO Right Now
That’s why we’re baking ads into our SEO now. We’re highly recommending it too.
If a service was $3k, $4k, $5k, we’re more than happy to take less ourselves and put a portion into ads, because we want to prove the concept and get the client moving.
We want them getting real business.
We’re also being very upfront now. No BS. No sweet stories.
SEO right now is brutal.
Less traffic. Less clicks. Harder attribution. More confusion in the market. Businesses feel it. Agencies feel it. Everyone’s trying to figure it out – watching videos, following trends, running tests and what have you.
But here’s the thing.
If someone tells you they have the magic bullet, they don’t.
What Actually Builds Trust
What clients appreciate more is honesty.
We tell them exactly what we’re thinking, planning, doing. And we tell them exactly how much we need to allocate to ads.
And the moment their phone rings and they close a deal, everything changes.
Now you’re not just another agency.
You’re the one that actually brought them business.
And that’s what matters.
Closing Thoughts
So yes, SEO has changed. There’s no denying that.
But it also hasn’t.
There are still industries where traditional SEO alone can win. There are still untapped markets. And then there are tougher, more competitive spaces where you need to go a level deeper.
You just have to understand what works for who.
And go all in.
For us, moving forward, we’re being selective. If it’s a hyper-competitive industry, we’re not taking it on unless there’s willingness to invest in ads alongside SEO.
Because we know the combination works.
And once you dial that in, you can scale it, optimize it, and drive real ROI.
And at the end of the day, that’s the only thing that matters.
…..
Agencies everywhere are struggling to find the “sweet spot” with all the changes “SEO” is going through. Despite the troubled waters, we continue to work hard and make clients succeed. We like to think that we know no such thing as “defeat”. That defeat is only but a state of mind. So, if you’re interested in working with winners, reach out to us at Rocket Agenc today! See ya!
